SHIRAISHI noted for its beautiful and peaceful inlet in KISYUKU-town in FUKUE-island on the East China Sea is considered to be last point of departure of the Japanese expeditionary envoy to Tang dynasty China. 

This envoy named KENTOUSHI, carried out from the early 7th century till the end of 9th century, introduced culture, technology and administrative systems from China to Japan. And so, here remains the natural hawser stone in SHIRAISHI, reportedly used to anchor envoy ships during their port call in old days. At present, in appreciation of the great achievements of KENTOUSHI who risked their own lives for the task, a small shrine stands here and the hawser stone is also enshrined as a tutelary deity of bumper fishing and marine safety.  東シナ海を臨む福江島は岐宿町の白石は、美しく静かな入江で知られ、唐王朝への遠征日本使節団の最後の寄港地とされている。

この遣唐使と称される使節団は、７世紀前半から９世紀末まで実施され、中国から日本に文化、技術、行政制度の数々をもたらした。それで、ここ白石には、往時の寄港中に遣唐使船を繋いだという艫綱石と呼ばれる自然石が残されている。現在、ここには、使命に命を懸けた遣唐使たちの偉業を讃え、小さな祠を建て、豊漁、海上安全の守り神としてこの石を祀っている。詳しくは冒頭のリンクビデオをご覧の程を!)
